Your complete guide for scheduling senior photos in San Luis Obispo & Santa Barbara County
If you’re a soon-to-be senior (or the proud parent of one), you’ve probably heard whispers that it’s time to start thinking about senior portraits. But between summer vacations, sports practices, and college prep, it’s easy to wonder: When is the right time to schedule senior photos?
As a senior photographer serving San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, I’m here to break down exactly when, why, and how to plan your session—so you can enjoy the experience and meet all those important deadlines without the last-minute stress.
JUNE THROUGH AUGUST—aka the summer before senior year—is the sweet spot for senior portraits across the Central Coast, including Paso Robles, Atascadero, Templeton, SLO, Arroyo Grande, Nipomo, and Santa Maria.
Why summer works so well:
Each school sets its own deadline for submitting senior portraits to the yearbook. Most schools require the photo to be submitted by SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER of senior year.
Here’s a rough idea (always check with your school or yearbook advisor!):
School | Approx. Yearbook Photo Deadline |
---|---|
Paso Robles High | Early October |
San Luis Obispo High | Late September |
Templeton High | Late September |
Arroyo Grande High | Mid-September |
Righetti High | Early October |
Nipomo High | Late September |
Santa Maria High | Early October |
To stay ahead of the game, aim to schedule your session by JULY OR EARLY AUGUST at the latest. This gives you time to receive your full gallery and choose the perfect image for submission.
Let’s be honest—once school starts, life speeds up. Between AP classes, fall sports, college apps, and social events, finding time for photos can feel overwhelming.
By choosing a summer session:
Here’s a quick look at how each month stacks up for senior portraits:
Month | Perks |
---|---|
June | Golden Hillsides + summer sunsets |
July | Warm golden tones + less wind inland |
August | Perfect light + last chance before school starts |
September | Possible if you book early, but can feel rushed |
Once you’ve booked your date, it’s time to plan the vibe.
Here are a few Central Coast favorites:
Summer sessions on the Central Coast are incredibly popular—and they book up quickly. If you’re thinking about senior portraits, don’t wait. Booking early ensures you’ll have the ideal date, location, and lighting to make the most of your shoot.
