If you are planning a surprise proposal, you are probably balancing two big goals:

ONE | Pull off the perfect moment without raising suspicion
TWO | Get beautiful, candid photos of the big “YES”

As a proposal photographer based in San Luis Obispo, I have helped many people plan surprise proposals, and the secret is all in the strategy. Inspired by advice from The Knot and fellow proposal photographers, here is exactly how to make your surprise believable, seamless, and unforgettable.

Planning Surprise Proposal

Step 1: Create the Best “Ruse” — Why Are You There?

Your partner needs a believable reason to be at the proposal location and dressed nicely. The best cover stories are simple, low-pressure, and slightly exciting.

The Photography Session Trick

Tell your partner you booked a “holiday card shoot,” “birthday photos,” or “photos for your anniversary.” This is one of the easiest setups because they are already expecting a camera to be there.

A Special Date or Dinner

Say you made a reservation somewhere nice or planned a romantic evening. This naturally encourages them to dress up and feel special without tipping them off.

Friends-Invited-Us-Here Plan

This works well for hikes, wineries, or picnics. Invite friends and then explain they canceled last minute, leaving just the two of you.

Family Gathering or Celebration Excuse

Say you are meeting up with family later that evening. Propose before the event starts for a beautiful and private moment.

Step 2: Choose a Location with Meaning and Privacy

The best surprise proposals happen at locations that feel meaningful and allow some space for the photographer to stay hidden or blend in.

Great Proposal Locations Around San Luis Obispo

  • Montaña de Oro bluffs
  • Shell Beach cliffs
  • Bishop Peak trail areas
  • Edna Valley vineyards
  • Laguna Lake Park
  • Terrace Hill
  • Pismo Preserve lookouts

For more privacy and fewer crowds, plan for a weekday sunset or sunrise session.

Step 3: Plan the Wardrobe Without Being Obvious

This step can feel tricky, but it is so important.

Ways to Suggest a Nice Outfit

  • “Let’s take a cute photo while we’re there.”
  • “I want to try out this new restaurant after.”
  • “It might be windy, wear something warm.”
  • “We should look nice for the event!”

Where to Hide the Ring

  • In a jacket pocket using a flat ring box
  • With a friend (or me) to deliver it on-site
  • Inside a picnic basket or backpack with other supplies

Step 4: Nail the Timing for Light and Privacy

Timing can make or break a surprise proposal.

Best Times to Propose in SLO

  • Golden hour: Soft, romantic lighting just before sunset
  • Weekdays: Less foot traffic, more privacy
  • Sunrise: Incredibly private and magical
  • Avoid mid-day lighting, which can be too harsh for photos

I always arrive early to scout the exact spot and adjust based on weather or lighting.

Step 5: Coordinate with Your Photographer (Secretly)

Clear communication is your best tool when planning a surprise proposal.

Before the Proposal

  • Share exact arrival times
  • Send a screenshot of what you’ll be wearing
  • Drop a pin to the exact proposal spot
  • Decide which way to face when you propose
  • Agree on a subtle signal to cue the moment (adjusting your jacket, a specific phrase, etc.)

On the Day Of

I will either stay hidden or blend into the area. When the moment comes, you walk your partner to the planned spot, and I will capture everything from a distance. Once they say yes, I will join you both for portraits.

Step 6: Have a Mini-Celebration Ready

Celebrating the moment right after makes it even more special and memorable.

Simple Celebration Ideas

  • A champagne toast
  • A bouquet of flowers
  • A picnic setup nearby
  • A handwritten letter or small scrapbook
  • Family or friends arriving later for group photos

Step 7: Prepare for Weather and Plan B

Even in sunny California, weather can change quickly, especially near the coast.

Always Bring:

  • A backup location
  • An alternate time if needed
  • A jacket or blanket (Montaña de Oro can be especially windy)
  • An umbrella in the car during winter
  • A photographer who is flexible and calm under pressure
