In this guide on how to personalize your senior photos, we’re breaking down creative ways to make your session stand out. From showcasing your favorite hobbies and sports to including your pets, these tips will help you add your hobbies, sports, and pets to make your senior session uniquely you.

Your senior year is such a milestone. It is a chance to reflect on everything you’ve accomplished and celebrate the person you’re becoming. And your senior portraits? They should feel just as unique as your story. Instead of cookie-cutter photos, imagine a gallery filled with moments that truly feel like you. As a SLO County senior photographer, one of my favorite parts of every session is helping my clients bring their personalities to life through meaningful details.

From the hobbies you love to the sports you’ve played and even the four-legged best friends who’ve been by your side, there are so many ways to create personalized senior portraits.

Here’s how we can make your session stand out and feel completely your own.

Four Ways to Personalize Your Senior Photos

ONE | Bring Props That Represent Your Hobbies

What you love to do in your free time says a lot about who you are. Incorporating your hobbies into your senior session adds layers of meaning to your photos while telling the story of what makes you, well…you. Maybe it’s the guitar you’ve been practicing for years, your favorite sketchbook filled with doodles and designs, or even a stack of books that reflects your inner bookworm. Little details like these can make your session feel intentional and deeply personal.

To keep things simple and photo-focused, I usually recommend choosing one or two meaningful props. This keeps the emphasis on you—not just the items you bring along—and creates a perfect balance of portrait and personality.

TWO | Celebrate Your Sports and Activities

For many seniors, high school has been full of early morning practices, game-day victories, and long hours spent perfecting your craft. Your senior session is the perfect time to honor those moments and all the dedication you’ve poured into your sport or activity.

Think of wearing your team uniform, showcasing your letterman jacket, or bringing the gear that represents your passion. It could be a pair of dance shoes, a marching band instrument, or even your FFA jacket.

We can capture a mix of casual, candid photos and more artistic ones—like football gear under glowing golden hour light or pointe shoes delicately hanging from your shoulder as you stand in an open field.

These types of portraits tell a story beyond the game or performance.
They reflect years of commitment and growth.

THREE | Include Your Dog (or Any Pet!)

If you’re like many of my seniors, your dog has been there through every big milestone. Including your pet in your session adds a layer of warmth and spontaneity that’s hard to replicate.

I suggest bringing along a friend or family member to help with your dog between shots.

We’ll also choose locations with plenty of open space. Don’t stress if they aren’t perfectly trained. We’ll capture playful candids and sweet moments that make your gallery feel even more personal.

FOUR | Style That Reflects You

Your wardrobe is one of the easiest ways to make your senior session feel like it’s truly yours.

Whether your vibe is casual, dressy, or somewhere in between, the most important thing is that you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing. You don’t have to force a style that doesn’t feel natural.

I recommend bringing two to three outfits. One that’s casual, one that’s a little dressier, and one tied to your activity or hobby. Layering with jackets, hats, or accessories creates visual variety without needing a full outfit change. And if you’re not sure which looks best on camera, bring a few options! !’m always happy to help you choose.

Best Central Coast Locations for Personalized Senior Photos

The Central Coast offers endless beautiful backdrops that complement your personality and style.

Some of my favorites include:

  • Montaña de Oro State Park | ideal for athletes, adventurers, and nature lovers.
  • Mission Plaza in Downtown SLO | urban and classic with historic architecture, perfect for readers, musicians, or seniors with a chic style.
  • Paso Robles Fields – open space perfect for creative props and pets to roam.
  • Avila Beach Pier – laid-back coastal vibes for seniors who feel most at home near the ocean.
  • Your high school campus – a great choice if you want to feature your team, stadium, or performing arts space.

Each of these locations gives us plenty of room to make your session feel relaxed and reflective of who you are right now.

Your Senior Photos Should Tell Your Story

At the end of the day, there’s no “right way” to personalize your senior portraits.

This is your moment to celebrate where you’ve been and where you’re going. Your photos should feel like a time capsule of this unforgettable season.
