As I, a San Luis Obispo Wedding Photographer, sit down to reflect on the past ten years of business, I’m struck by the countless business lessons learned, challenges faced, and triumphs celebrated.

From navigating the intricacies of networking to understanding the importance of showcasing my work, each experience has shaped my approach to business in profound ways.

Here’s a glimpse into what I’ve learned in a decade of entrepreneurship:

6 Business Lessons Learned as a Wedding Photographer

ONE | Networking is Key

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the power of networking. Building genuine relationships with fellow professionals and clients alike has been instrumental in my growth. These connections not only provide support but also serve as a source of inspiration and opportunity, especially during challenging times.

TWO | Outsource Your Weaknesses

Recognizing my strengths and weaknesses has been crucial to my success. While I excel in photography, areas like accounting and blogging are not my forte. Outsourcing tasks to experts in their respective fields has not only saved me time and headaches but has also allowed me to focus on what I do best.

The cost is well worth it.

I outsource our gifting and accounting. Nikkels Photography also has a Virtual Assistant who helps me with my newsletters, blogs, Pinterest, TikTok, and so much more.

THREE | Patience is a Virtue

Building a thriving business takes time and perseverance. Patience has been my greatest ally during moments of uncertainty or slow progress. Embracing the journey and taking small steps each day towards my goals has ultimately led to significant achievements.

FOUR | Everything Has a Season

Business, like life, has its seasons of abundance and scarcity.

Learning to navigate these fluctuations with grace and resilience has been essential. Embracing both the highs and lows, while actively seeking opportunities for growth during quieter periods, has been key to maintaining momentum.

FIVE | Show What You Want to Sell

As a photographer, showcasing my work is paramount.

Clients can’t book services they haven’t seen, so it’s essential to curate a portfolio that aligns with my desired offerings. Investing in high-quality branding sessions has allowed me to effectively convey my style and attract my ideal clientele.

SIX | Hone in on Your Ideal Client

Understanding my target audience has been transformative. By identifying and catering to my ideal clients, I’ve been able to tailor my marketing efforts and services to better meet their needs. This targeted approach has not only increased client satisfaction but has also strengthened my brand identity.

As I embark on the next chapter of my entrepreneurial journey, I carry with me these invaluable lessons learned over the past decade.

While the road ahead may hold its own set of challenges, I am confident that with patience, perseverance, and a commitment to growth, I will continue to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of business.
