When you’re planning family photos on the California Central Coast, the time of year can completely change the look and feel of your session. We may not have four dramatically different seasons, but our landscape definitely changes throughout the year.

The hills go from green to gold. Wildflowers show up for a few short weeks. Summer fog rolls in along the coast. Fall brings some of the warmest, prettiest evenings of the year.

So while there really isn’t a bad time to schedule family photos in San Luis Obispo or along the Central Coast, there might be a season that’s a much better fit for your family.

Here’s what you can expect throughout the year.

Fall Family Photos on the Central Coast: September Through November

I’ll start with the most popular one.

Fall is my busiest season for family photography, and there’s a reason so many families want these dates.

By September, the landscape around San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles has settled into those golden, dry tones that feel so distinctly California. The oak trees, open fields, vineyard rows, and rolling hills catch the evening light beautifully, especially as the sun starts setting earlier.

The light itself changes too. It sits lower, feels warmer, and gives us that golden glow people tend to picture when they’re imagining outdoor family photos.

And fall isn’t just beautiful inland.

Fall Is One of My Favorite Times for Beach Family Photos

October and November can be incredible months for family photos at the beach on the Central Coast.

Summer crowds have started to disappear, the coastline feels a little quieter, and we can get some surprisingly warm evenings. Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, and Avila Beach are all beautiful this time of year.

There’s also the obvious reason fall books quickly: everyone suddenly remembers they need a photo for the holiday card.

If updated family photos are on your list for fall, please don’t wait until October to start looking at dates. September through November consistently fills faster than the rest of my calendar.

Winter Family Photos in San Luis Obispo: December Through February

Winter does not get enough credit around here.

I think people hear “winter family photos” and immediately picture bare trees, freezing temperatures, and gray everything.

That’s not really what winter looks like on the Central Coast.

Once we start getting rain, those dry golden hills turn green. And I mean green. Locations that looked completely different a few months earlier suddenly become lush, layered, and full of color.

If you’re hoping for family photos with the green hills around San Luis Obispo in the background, winter is actually one of the best times to schedule them.

Don’t Be Afraid of a Cloudy Forecast

Winter also gives us some really beautiful soft light.

A cloudy day isn’t necessarily bad news for your family photos. Clouds essentially create a giant diffuser for the sun, which can give us even light, beautiful skin tones, and fewer harsh shadows.

It also means less squinting, which anyone with kids can appreciate.

Obviously, rain is the variable here. We may have to watch the forecast a little more closely or be flexible with a session date, but that’s part of photographing outdoors.

When winter cooperates, it’s one of the prettiest and most overlooked seasons we have.

Spring Family Photos and Wildflowers: March Through May

If you want wildflowers, this is your season.

There are a few weeks every spring when driving around San Luis Obispo County feels a little ridiculous in the best possible way. The hills are green, wild grasses are everywhere, and mustard flowers, poppies, and other blooms start appearing throughout the landscape.

It doesn’t last long.

Which, of course, is part of what makes it so good.

Spring family sessions tend to feel bright, playful, and full of movement. Kids can run through the grass, the temperatures are usually comfortable, and there is so much natural texture and color to work with.

Wildflower Season Is Beautiful and Unpredictable

I do have to give the disclaimer I give every family who asks about wildflower photos:

Mother Nature does not care about my calendar.

The exact timing of blooms changes every year depending on rainfall, temperatures, and what kind of winter we’ve had. Some years are incredible. Some are quieter. And once those hills start changing, they can change quickly.

Summer Family Photos: June Through August

California summer means sunny skies and perfect beach weather every single day, right?

Well…

If you’ve spent a June morning in Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, or Avila Beach, you already know where I’m going with this.

June Gloom is very real.

The marine layer can make mornings and early afternoons along the coast cool, gray, and foggy. Sometimes it burns off. Sometimes it decides it’s comfortable and hangs around for a while.

But here’s the thing: fog isn’t necessarily bad for photos.

It creates incredibly soft light and can give the beach a quieter, almost dreamy feel. And when it does burn off later in the day, we’re often left with beautiful conditions heading into sunset.

Inland Summer Sessions Are a Different Story

Head toward San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles and summer feels completely different.

It’s warm, dry, golden, and sunny.

This is where the time of day becomes especially important. Midday summer sun is generally not what we want for an outdoor family session. It’s bright, it’s harsh, and no one wants to spend their family photos trying not to squint while also convincing their children that standing in the heat is fun.

Golden hour, however?

Completely different story.

Summer days give us long evenings, and once the sun starts dropping, the light can be gorgeous.

Summer is also a great time for vacation family photos on the Central Coast. If your family comes to Pismo Beach or Avila Beach every summer, setting aside one evening for photos is a pretty special way to document a place that’s already part of your family’s story.

So, What Is the Best Time of Year for Family Photos in San Luis Obispo?

I wish I could point to one perfect month for family photos, but the truth is that the best time depends on what you want your session to look and feel like.

If you love the golden California hills, late summer and fall are hard to beat, while winter and early spring bring the lush green landscapes that make the Central Coast feel completely different. Spring is the season to aim for if you have your heart set on wildflower family photos, and if you’re picturing your family barefoot and running through the water at Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, or Avila Beach, summer or fall can be especially beautiful.

That’s one of the things I love most about photographing families here. There isn’t one season that’s better than the rest. Each one shows off a different side of the Central Coast, and the right choice really comes down to which one feels most like your family.

One Thing I Recommend in Every Season: Golden Hour

Whatever month you choose, there’s one recommendation you’ll probably hear from me: let’s plan around golden hour.

The hour leading up to sunset gives us some of the most beautiful light for outdoor family photos. With the sun sitting lower in the sky, the light becomes softer and warmer, without the harsh overhead shadows we tend to get in the middle of the day. It also gives us more freedom to move around and let your session unfold naturally.

Instead of trying to keep everyone perfectly posed in the one patch of decent light, we can walk, play, run along the beach, cuddle, explore, and give your kids space to be themselves. That’s usually when the moments you’ll love most happen anyway.

During the summer, golden hour can mean keeping little ones up a little past their usual bedtime, which I know isn’t always ideal. But I promise I’m not trying to throw off your entire evening. The light really is worth it.

Choosing the Right Season for Your Central Coast Family Photos

More than anything, I want the location and season you choose to actually mean something to you.

Maybe your family comes back to Pismo Beach every summer, and photos with sandy feet and wet clothes would feel much more like you than standing in a perfectly styled field. Maybe you love the green hills around San Luis Obispo after the first winter rains, or you’ve driven past those spring wildflowers for years thinking, We need family photos there.

And sometimes, the decision is much simpler. Maybe everyone in your family is miraculously free on the same Thursday in October. That’s a perfectly good reason too. Your family photos don’t need to look like anyone else’s, and you don’t need to choose a certain season simply because it’s considered the “best” time for photos.
