If you read my last blog, you already know that something has changed for me.

After losing someone I loved, I found myself searching for printed photographs. I wasn’t looking for the thousands of images tucked away on my phone or sitting on a hard drive. I was looking for the photos I could hold in my hands. The ones hanging on a wall. The ones that had quietly become part of everyday life without anyone realizing it.

That experience made me realize something I couldn’t ignore.

For years, I had been helping families create beautiful photographs, but I wasn’t doing enough to make sure those photographs actually became part of their homes. Too often, our time together ended with a digital gallery, and while I knew those images were loved, I also knew how easy it is for life to get busy. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and suddenly those photos you couldn’t wait to see are sitting in a folder you rarely open.

So while the heart of portrait sessions at Nikkels Photography will always stay the same, the experience is evolving in a way that I believe better serves the families I photograph.

The Portrait Session You Know and Love Isn’t Changing

The part that happens behind the camera is exactly what it’s always been.

Before your session, we’ll spend time planning together. We’ll choose a location that feels natural for your family, talk through outfit ideas so everything comes together beautifully, and create a plan that reflects who you are rather than forcing you into something that doesn’t feel authentic.

Once we’re together, my goal remains exactly the same. I want your session to feel relaxed, playful, and genuine. Your kids will have room to explore instead of being asked to stand perfectly still. If your toddler decides they’d rather wander than smile, we’ll roll with it. And if your dog joins us, I’ll happily spend several minutes negotiating for a few seconds of cooperation.

The best photographs have never come from perfect posing. They come from connection, movement, and the little moments in between that no one plans for.

That part of my work isn’t changing because it’s always been the part I love most.

Portrait sessions at Nikkels Photography are designed to create more than beautiful images—they're created to become lasting artwork.

What Happens After Your Family Photography Session Is Changing

Your photographs deserve more than a digital gallery.

For a long time, the final step in my process was delivering your online gallery. Your gallery would arrive, you’d download your favorites, share a few on social media, order holiday cards when December rolled around, and tell yourself you’d eventually get around to printing them.

I don’t blame anyone for that.

Life gets busy, and printing photos always feels like something you’ll have time for later. Before you know it, “later” has quietly turned into years.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized I was unintentionally contributing to that cycle by ending our experience before your photographs truly found a home.

That’s the part that’s changing.

Instead of simply sending you a gallery and wishing you well, we’ll meet one more time after your session. We’ll sit down together, look through your photographs, and talk about what comes next.

Designing Artwork That Fits Your Home

Every family’s home tells a different story.

We’ll talk about the spaces in your home that matter most. There might be a wall you’ve been meaning to fill for years, an album you’ve always imagined your children pulling off the shelf, or grandparents who would treasure a framed portrait more than anything else.

There’s no predetermined package I’m trying to fit you into.

Instead, we’ll design something that’s personal to your family, your home, and the way you want to enjoy these memories for years to come.

Some families choose one statement piece hanging above the fireplace, while others love the idea of a growing gallery wall that tells the story of their family through every season. An heirloom album that gets passed around during holidays or pulled out on quiet Sunday afternoons may be the perfect fit for someone else.

Every finished piece looks a little different because every family lives differently.

The goal is simple: your family photos become part of your home instead of becoming another forgotten folder on your computer.

Why Printed Family Photos Matter So Much

The value of family photographs grows with time.

I have a wedding album that sits on a shelf in our home.

Without a doubt, I know exactly where it is, how it feels when I pull it down, which pages make me stop a little longer every single time.

That album has become woven into our story in a way no digital gallery ever has.

It’s there when we want to remember, when friends and family come over, and years later, waiting in exactly the same place we left it.

My hope is that your children grow up seeing themselves on the walls of the home where they’re being raised. Someday they’ll flip through albums, laugh about how little they used to be, and remember what this season of life felt like. Those photographs become familiar, comforting, and meaningful simply because they’ve always been there.

That’s something a digital gallery alone can never replace.

A New Family Photography Experience at Nikkels Photography

This isn’t about selling more products. It’s about making sure the investment you make in family photography becomes something you actually experience long after your session is over.

The photographs we create together are too meaningful to disappear into cloud storage or live on a hard drive you’ll eventually replace. They deserve to be held, displayed, and enjoyed every single day—not tucked away waiting for “someday.”

As a family photographer, that’s the experience I want every client to leave with. Not just beautiful images, but meaningful artwork that becomes part of your family’s everyday life and continues telling your story for generations.
