I am a big fan of The Cliffs Hotel and Spa, and I’m not going to pretend to be neutral about this one.

I got married at The Cliffs Hotel & Spa in 2013. So yes, I have feelings about this venue. But after more than twelve years of photographing weddings throughout California’s Central Coast, I’ve also developed a pretty clear understanding of what makes a wedding venue truly exceptional.

And The Cliffs Hotel & Spa delivers every single time.

As a Central Coast wedding photographer, I’ve worked at countless venues throughout San Luis Obispo County. Some are beautiful, convenient, and photograph well.

The Cliffs manages to check all of those boxes at once.

If you’re searching for a stunning oceanfront wedding venue in Pismo Beach, here’s why The Cliffs continues to be one of my favorite places to photograph weddings.

Oceanfront Wedding Views That Define the Central Coast

One of the biggest reasons couples fall in love with The Cliffs Hotel & Spa is its location.

Perched directly above the Pacific Ocean, this Pismo Beach wedding venue offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views on the Central Coast.

When I say the ceremony lawn sits on the edge of the ocean, I mean it literally.

The oceanfront ceremony space overlooks dramatic cliffs, endless blue water, and open skies that seem to stretch forever. The combination of ocean views, sea breezes, and golden California light creates an atmosphere that feels relaxed, romantic, and distinctly Central Coast.

For couples, it’s an unforgettable place to exchange vows.

For photographers, it’s a dream.

The natural beauty of the setting does so much of the work. Even simple floral designs look elevated when framed against the Pacific Ocean. The backdrop is timeless, elegant, and impossible to replicate anywhere else.

Why The Cliffs Hotel & Spa Is a Dream Wedding Venue for Photography

As a wedding photographer, I’m constantly paying attention to how a venue functions throughout an entire wedding day, not just how it looks in photos.

The most beautiful venue in the world can still create challenges if guests feel disconnected, timelines feel rushed, or there aren’t enough options for different parts of the day. The best wedding venues combine beauty with functionality, creating an experience that feels effortless for couples, guests, and vendors alike.

That’s one of the reasons I love photographing weddings at The Cliffs Hotel & Spa.

The venue offers an incredible amount of flexibility, with multiple beautiful spaces that transition seamlessly from one part of the day to the next. From getting ready in ocean-view suites to exchanging vows on the lawn overlooking the Pacific, enjoying cocktail hour on the Waterfall Terrace, celebrating in the Grand Ballroom, and sneaking away for sunset portraits on the beach, every part of the wedding day has its own unique setting and atmosphere.

Instead of feeling like every moment takes place in the same location, couples get a wedding day that feels dynamic, intentional, and visually diverse. The result is a wedding gallery filled with variety, beautiful backdrops, and moments that each have their own distinct feel while still telling one cohesive story.

Oceanfront Ceremony Lawn

The ceremony lawn creates clean, uncluttered images with breathtaking ocean views, open skies, and incredible natural light. With the Pacific Ocean stretching out behind you, the backdrop feels both dramatic and timeless without requiring excessive decor. The setting allows the focus to remain exactly where it should be: on the couple, their loved ones, and the moment they’re saying “I do.”

Waterfall Terrace Cocktail Hour

The Waterfall Terrace is one of my favorite spaces on the property.

While guests enjoy cocktails, appetizers, and conversation, I can often slip away with the wedding party or newlyweds to capture portraits without pulling them away from their guests for long periods of time. The space creates a natural transition between the ceremony and reception, allowing everyone to relax, mingle, and enjoy the celebration while we take advantage of some of the property’s most beautiful photo locations.

Everything flows naturally, which helps the day feel effortless and keeps the focus on enjoying the moment rather than managing a timeline.

Grand Ballroom Reception Space

The Grand Ballroom offers nearly 30,000 square feet of coastal elegance and sophistication, making it an incredible space for both intimate moments and lively celebrations. With plenty of room for dining, dancing, and gathering with loved ones, it creates a welcoming atmosphere that feels both elevated and comfortable.

One detail photographers especially appreciate is the naturally lit foyer. It creates beautiful opportunities for portraits and candid moments without the harsh lighting challenges that many indoor venues present. The abundance of natural light helps maintain the bright, airy feel couples love while creating timeless images throughout the reception experience.

Beach Access for Sunset Portraits

One of the biggest advantages of hosting a wedding at The Cliffs is the direct beach access.

Within minutes, couples can leave the reception, kick off their shoes, and walk along the shoreline for sunset portraits. It’s a chance to step away from the celebration for a few quiet moments together while taking in the beauty of the coast and reflecting on the day.

The combination of ocean cliffs, sandy beaches, rolling waves, and California sunsets creates some of the most iconic wedding photographs on the Central Coast. The variety of scenery allows for images that feel romantic, natural, and uniquely tied to the location, giving couples portraits that truly capture the spirit of a coastal California wedding.

The Exceptional Wedding Team Behind The Cliffs Hotel & Spa

Beautiful views are important, but there is something even more valuable that often doesn’t show up in venue photos: the people behind the scenes who make the entire experience possible. The team at The Cliffs Hotel & Spa has always been one of the venue’s greatest strengths, and it’s a big part of why I continue to recommend it to couples year after year.

Anna was the event coordinator who helped bring my own wedding day to life back in 2013. Her professionalism, attention to detail, and calm leadership helped shape the culture that still exists at the venue today. While Bianca now leads the events team, she does so with that same level of care, organization, and dedication. What makes this transition especially meaningful is that Bianca steps into the role with years of mentorship and institutional knowledge behind her while also bringing her own strengths and perspective to the position.

That kind of continuity matters. As a photographer, I’ve worked alongside countless venue coordinators over the years, and the best ones create an environment where everyone can focus on what they do best. When I’m photographing a wedding at The Cliffs, I know the logistics are being handled, timelines are staying on track, vendors are communicating effectively, and couples feel fully supported throughout the day. That trust allows me to focus entirely on documenting genuine moments rather than troubleshooting behind-the-scenes details, which ultimately creates a better experience for everyone involved.

A Full-Service Wedding Venue for Central Coast Couples

One of the reasons many couples choose The Cliffs Hotel & Spa is its ability to host an entire wedding weekend in one location.

This is far more than simply a ceremony and reception venue.

Couples can host:

  • Rehearsal dinners
  • Welcome gatherings
  • Wedding ceremonies
  • Cocktail hours
  • Reception celebrations
  • Farewell brunches
  • Spa experiences
  • Guest accommodations

With on-site lodging, dining, ocean views, and event spaces all in one location, guests can fully immerse themselves in the wedding experience without needing to travel between venues.

The Cliffs Hotel & Spa can accommodate intimate weddings as well as larger celebrations of up to 325 guests, making it a versatile option for a wide variety of wedding styles and guest counts.

Whether you’re envisioning a barefoot coastal celebration or a sophisticated black-tie affair, the venue’s customizable wedding packages can help bring your vision to life.

Why I Continue to Recommend The Cliffs Hotel & Spa to Wedding Couples

After all these years, I still find myself returning to The Cliffs Hotel & Spa again and again.

Part of that is personal. I stood on that oceanfront property in 2013 and made a promise to someone I love, and today I often find myself standing in many of those same places with a camera in my hands, watching other couples begin their own stories. There is something incredibly special about witnessing those moments in a place that has been such a meaningful part of my own life.

But beyond the nostalgia, there are very practical reasons why so many of my couples continue to choose The Cliffs for their wedding day. The oceanfront views are breathtaking, the staff is exceptional, and the overall experience feels seamless from start to finish. Every part of the property is thoughtfully designed to create a memorable celebration while also providing incredible opportunities for photography. Whether it’s the ceremony overlooking the Pacific, portraits on the beach at sunset, or a lively reception in the Grand Ballroom, the venue consistently delivers a wedding experience that feels both elevated and relaxed.

For couples searching for a Pismo Beach wedding venue that combines stunning coastal scenery, experienced event coordination, luxury accommodations, and unforgettable wedding photography opportunities, The Cliffs Hotel & Spa remains one of the very best options on California’s Central Coast.

It’s a venue I’ll always have a soft spot for, and one that continues to impress me every time I have the opportunity to photograph a wedding there.
