There is something about taking family photos in Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, and Avila Beach that never gets old.
Maybe it’s the way the light softens as the sun gets closer to the ocean. Or how kids immediately forget they’re supposed to be taking pictures once their feet hit the sand. Whatever it is, the California Central Coast makes a pretty incredible backdrop for family photography.
One of my favorite things about photographing families along the coast is how different each beach can feel. Pismo Beach offers wide-open sand and beautiful sunsets. Shell Beach brings dramatic cliffs, rocky coves, and incredible coastal views. Meanwhile, Avila Beach has a softer, more relaxed atmosphere that families with young kids often love.
If you’re planning Pismo Beach family photos or looking for the best beach photography locations near San Luis Obispo, choosing the right setting can make a big difference.
So, let’s talk about three of my favorite coastal areas for family sessions and what makes each one special.

If you’re picturing classic California beach family photos, Pismo Beach is a wonderful place to start.
With its wide shoreline, beautiful ocean views, and iconic pier, Pismo offers plenty of space for families to move around. That extra room is especially helpful when photographing young kids who would rather run through the sand than stand still for a picture.
And really, I don’t blame them.
One of the reasons I love family photography in Pismo Beach is that we can capture a little bit of everything. There is room for traditional family portraits, playful moments near the water, and plenty of candid photos along the shoreline.
Pismo Beach offers a beautiful combination of natural scenery and practical accessibility.
The wide stretches of sand give families room to spread out, while the pier adds an interesting element to the background. Depending on the tide and where we photograph, we can create a variety of images without having to travel far.
For families with toddlers or multiple children, that flexibility is a big advantage.
Instead of asking everyone to stay in one small area, we can let kids explore a little while capturing natural moments together.
Golden hour is one of my favorite times for Pismo Beach family photography.
As the sun gets lower, the light becomes softer and warmer. On clear evenings, the west-facing coastline gives us beautiful sunset views over the Pacific Ocean.
Of course, the Central Coast has its own weather patterns. Marine fog can roll in, especially during late spring and early summer. However, those overcast conditions can also create soft, flattering light for family portraits.
Pismo Beach is especially great for: Larger families, young children, playful beach sessions, and anyone dreaming of classic Central Coast sunset photos.

Shell Beach might be my personal favorite of the three.
Where Pismo Beach feels wide and open, Shell Beach has a completely different personality. The rocky cliffs, secluded-looking coves, coastal bluffs, and textured shoreline create a setting that feels a little more dramatic.
It’s one of those places where you can turn around and find an entirely different backdrop just a few steps away.
For families who want something beyond the traditional sandy beach photos, Shell Beach family photography offers so many beautiful possibilities.
The scenery is what really sets Shell Beach apart.
Depending on the location, we can photograph along elevated coastal bluffs with sweeping ocean views or explore smaller beach areas surrounded by rock formations.
That variety makes Shell Beach especially beautiful for families who love natural scenery and want their photos to have a slightly more artistic feel.
The cliffs and rocks also create interesting textures in the background. Combined with soft evening light, they give family portraits a look that feels distinctly Central Coast.
Shell Beach requires a little more planning than some of the larger sandy beaches nearby.
Certain beach access points involve stairs, while others lead to rocky areas that may not work well for every family. Tides can also affect how much shoreline is available.
For that reason, I always consider the ages of the kids, everyone’s comfort level, and the specific location before planning a session.
Families with older children may love exploring a rocky cove. On the other hand, parents with babies or toddlers might prefer one of the beautiful bluff areas where we can enjoy the coastal scenery without navigating the rocks.
Shell Beach is especially great for: Families who love dramatic coastal scenery, older kids, couples, and anyone wanting family portraits with cliffs, ocean views, and natural texture.

Avila Beach has a warmth to it that feels a little different from the surrounding coastline.
Tucked into a sheltered bay, Avila often experiences milder conditions than some of the more exposed beaches nearby. The sandy shoreline, ocean views, and charming beachfront atmosphere make it a beautiful place for relaxed family photography.
If you’re planning Avila Beach family photos, especially with babies or younger children, this location is definitely worth considering.
One of the biggest advantages of Avila Beach is its generally sheltered setting.
While ocean conditions can always change, the bay often has gentler surf than more exposed stretches of coastline. That can make planning a session near the shoreline a little easier, especially when photographing families with small children.
The beach also offers plenty of beautiful scenery without requiring a complicated location.
We can photograph along the sand, incorporate the ocean in the background, and capture those sweet moments that happen when everyone is simply enjoying time together.
Absolutely!
Fall can be a wonderful time for family photography in Avila Beach. The Central Coast often experiences beautiful weather during September, October, and November, and Avila’s sheltered location can make it especially pleasant.
The softer evening light also gives us a beautiful opportunity to capture natural family portraits.
Of course, we’ll still plan around the weather, tides, and sunset time. But if you’re hoping for a beach session later in the year, Avila Beach is a great option to explore.
Avila Beach is especially great for: Families with babies or toddlers, relaxed beach portraits, fall family sessions, and anyone who loves a softer coastal atmosphere.

All three locations are beautiful, but the best choice depends on your family and the kind of photographs you want.
Here’s a quick comparison to help you narrow things down.
| LOCATION | BEST FOR | OVERALL FEEL |
| Pismo Beach | Young kids, large families, sunset portraits | Open, playful, classic beach |
| Shell Beach | Older kids, dramatic scenery, coastal portraits | Textured, scenic, adventurous |
| Avila Beach | Babies, toddlers, relaxed family sessions | Soft, welcoming, laid-back |
If you’re still unsure, don’t worry. Helping you choose the right location is part of what I do as a San Luis Obispo family photographer.
Sometimes the best location isn’t the one with the most dramatic view. It’s the one where your family can relax, move around comfortably, and enjoy the experience.

Once you’ve chosen a location, a little planning can make your beach session even better.
Here are a few things I always recommend considering before family photos along the California Central Coast.
Lighting can completely change the look of your family photos.
For most beach sessions, I love planning around golden hour, the period shortly before sunset when the light is lower and often warmer.
Instead of harsh overhead sunlight, we get softer light that can be beautiful for portraits. It also creates opportunities for those dreamy backlit photographs along the water.
That said, coastal fog and cloud cover can change our plans. Fortunately, soft overcast light can be just as beautiful in a different way.
Even when the weather feels warm in San Luis Obispo, the beaches can be surprisingly cool.
Coastal breezes are common, especially later in the afternoon. As a result, I always recommend bringing an extra layer for everyone.
Flowy dresses, linen shirts, soft knits, and comfortable clothing work beautifully for beach sessions. A little movement in your clothing or hair can add to the photographs, too.
The important thing is making sure everyone feels comfortable.
You don’t need to dress everyone in white shirts and jeans to get beautiful beach family photos.
In fact, I usually recommend coordinating colors rather than matching outfits.
Soft blues, warm neutrals, sage greens, muted earth tones, and sandy shades all photograph beautifully along the Central Coast.
Texture also makes a difference. Linen, lightweight knits, cotton, and soft denim add interest without distracting from your family.

This is especially important for family photos in Shell Beach and other rocky coastal areas.
A location that looks beautiful at low tide may have very little accessible shoreline when the tide comes in. Additionally, some beach access points require stairs or walking across uneven ground.
That’s why I always consider the tide, weather, sunset, and your family’s needs when choosing where to photograph.
Having a plan ahead of time means we can spend less of your session figuring out logistics and more time actually taking photos.

Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, and Avila Beach are all beautiful options for family photography near San Luis Obispo. Pismo offers wide sandy beaches, Shell Beach has dramatic coastal scenery, and Avila Beach provides a more sheltered setting.
The best choice depends on your children’s ages, accessibility needs, and the overall look you want for your photos.
You can take beautiful family photos in Pismo Beach throughout the year. Fall often brings pleasant weather and beautiful evening light, while spring offers softer coastal conditions. Summer is also popular, although marine fog and larger crowds can affect timing.

Absolutely! Beach sessions can be wonderful for families with babies, toddlers, and young children.
The key is choosing a location that works for their ages and energy levels. Wide sandy areas are often easier for little kids than rocky coves or beaches with steep access points.
Choose comfortable outfits that coordinate without matching exactly. Soft neutrals, muted blues, sage green, and earth tones complement the ocean and sandy coastline beautifully.
Light layers are also helpful because beach temperatures can change quickly in the evening.

Whether you’re dreaming of sunset family photos in Pismo Beach, dramatic coastal portraits in Shell Beach, or a relaxed session along the sand in Avila Beach, there are so many beautiful places to photograph your family on the Central Coast.
As a San Luis Obispo family photographer, I love helping families choose locations that fit their personalities and make the experience feel easy. We’ll plan around the light, tides, weather, and all the little details that help a session run smoothly.
Most importantly, we’ll make room for your family to be themselves.
The running, laughing, sandy feet, little hugs, and moments you didn’t even realize were happening are often the photographs you’ll love most.
