Getting the perfect family photo
Although I am a Wedding Photographer based in San Luis Obispo, I also capture family portraits. Doing so, I have found that the number one thing families want is the perfect picture to hang on their walls!
So, here are my secret tips!
Trust me, you are gonna want to keep reading.
I know it sounds cliché, but you would be surprised just how much this can make or break your photos.
When in doubt, keep it simple! I know they can be fun, but busy and chaotic patterns can really detract from the subject! Which, in this case, is you and your family. Instead, stick with solid, neutral colors. If you are really wanting to incorporate a pattern, keep it minimal.
Also, start with mom, and work your way out. Plan your outfits around what she is wearing.

If you have small kids, DON’T schedule your session during naptime or meals! I promise it isn’t worth the fight with grouchy kids.
Usually, photographers like to schedule their sessions at sunrise or sunset. If your family isn’t morning people, then opt for sunset! Or, if it is the opposite, then do that. Make sure to talk with your photographer and see what they recommend as well.
Don’t take your family photos so seriously. If you go into it with a ton of expectations of how everything is going to happen, you are going to be stressed and disappointed!
Enjoy the imperfect moments with your family and don’t worry so much about recreating the Pinterest poses you spent hours looking up. As a photographer, let me tell you that the best photos come when you are just focused on having a good time with your family.
