So you just scheduled your family photos, now what? You need to figure out what the heck you are going to wear!! I will break it down into a few easy steps on how to pick outfits.

Five Easy Steps for Amazing Outfits

Look at Your Home Decor

We want you to display your family photos in your home. So think about where these pictures are going to be displayed. Look at the colors and style of that room. Do you have one dominant color in your home? Your outfits should complement, not matchy-match your decor.

Start with One Person & One Main Color

I recommend starting your outfits by getting one person set and using them as the anchor. I like to start with Mom. We want her to feel beautiful, confident, and glowing. Pull all remaining colors and accents from her outfit.

  • What to Wear: Let’s start with hair & makeup. Having professional hair and makeup done for the shoot makes you feel extra confident and extra sexy and that definitely shows in the photos. We know you will look stunning!! For makeup, keep in mind that it never photographs as dramatically as it feels. And for hair, we always recommend wearing your hair down for the session because it’s so pretty when it catches the sunlight!
  • Clothing: We recommend wearing a dress that is tight in your waist (such as a ruched/gathered waist) that way, it shows your figure, and it can either sit above the knee or be full length and flowy. If it doesn’t have a waistline it is best paired with a belt (to give you a great waistline), and heels or wedges, and simple jewelry. Heels elongate your legs, and so does a leg slit, and they both photograph so well! And ladies, if your dress is too high necked it will cut off your figure and look boxy, so don’t be afraid of a plunging neckline. We love how white/ivory flowy dresses photograph in golden light, you can see what we mean on the Pinterest board! A gorgeous neutral-colored dress always photographs well.

Add Accessories

Accessories not only add to your outfit but can be fun to use in photos. Necklaces for the kids to play with or hats to hide behind. Family photos are a time to capture who your family is at that time. So consider a fun scarf, cute coat, or stylish hat.

Consider Your Background/Location.

You want to stand out from your background. So not too much green if you are having your session in a forest or too much brown in a ranch or barn. Jewel tones, pastels, and neutrals almost always will work well.

Plan Ahead & Reach Out to Your Photographer

Once you have booked your session, start thinking about what you want to wear for family photos. You may think certain clothes will fit your kids or that one dress is clean. If you wait until the day before or a few days before, you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting, being dirty, or needing to be dry cleaned. Reach out to your photographer! They can help with coordinating with your location. You can even text them some outfit ideas and they will help narrow it down for you.
